Follow Through and Overlapping Action
Follow through and Overlapping Action are two very similar techniques and so basically the same job. They help to make an animation more believable by applying the law of physics to it.
Historic Example
Examples can be seen throughout ‘Pluto’s Playmate’ 1941, especially at 0.56 mins; Here even though the main body of the character has ceased moving, the ears still follow through with the action to finish the movement realistically.
Contemporary Example
Another example is Merida’s hair from Disney Pixar’s ‘Brave’. Whenever the character stops moving the hair is always in motion, following through the action. This makes her movements believable and shows the different weight and property of her hair to the rest of her body, it applies the physics and make it real.
